Creation Care Week

The Creation Care Task Force has scheduled several activities for our Christian observance of Earth Day, which is always on April 22; our Creation Care Sunday will be April 21. At worship, prayers and music will be selected to honor Gods’ creation. In the afternoon, FPC’s premier naturalists, Marily Kolton and Lou Dwarshuis, will lead a wildflower walk at the Botanical Gardens at 2:00 pm. That evening, WNC Green Congregations will host a candlelight/prayer vigil in Pritchard Park in solidarity with the Climate Convergence in Raleigh and FPC is invited to attend.

Several additional activities will also occur in the week leading up to Creation Care Sunday. To inaugurate FPC’s adoption of two blocks on Church Street and Lexington Avenue, the entire church is invited to our first bi-monthly clean-up on Saturday, April 20 at 10:00 am. On Wednesday, April 17, Charlene Frellick will prepare a local foods dinner followed by a program on Just Living (Sign Up HERE). And remember the Voluntary Gas Tax challenge lasts for the entire month of April! Make a commitment to take part in at least one of these activities to honor Gods’ creation.

Sprout! 2013 Garden Project

The Black Mountain Home for Children Garden Project has a new name, a new Facebook page, two new leaders, and an exciting new funding source to start a new season. The “Home Grown Garden” was honored with a grant from Buncombe County for an irrigation system, wheelbarrows, tools, a picnic table and a shade canopy to make gardening more pleasant for our volunteers.

We will kick off the 2013 planting season (our third year) with a workday on Saturday, April 6 from 10:00 am to noon and repeat every Saturday in April at that time. No experience is necessary, but do bring drinking water. We will continue our lasagna garden layering technique, build a trellis, plant peas and other early crops. Look for the garden sign on Lake Eden Road by the stone silo before you get to the entrance of the Home. And be sure to check out Home Grown Garden on Facebook.
